Principles of the Explorer event - "The John Bradbury Trophy"

The John Bradbury event (12 to 14 miles) is held at the Gradbach Scout Campsite, Quanford, near Buxton situated in the beautiful Peak District hills. Gradbach is approximately seven miles from Buxton, Derbyshire, Leek, Staffordshire and Macclesfield, Cheshire so this is truly a rural hike.

  1. The entry fee for the weekend is £37.50 per team of four Explorer Scouts.

  2. The team(s) from each participating group must be accompanied by a leader.

  3. A team consists of four Explorer Scouts whose combined age does not exceed 62 years.

  4. The minimum age for contestants is 14 years, the maximum age 17 years, on 31st August 2004.

  5. Teams must camp at the site, arriving on Friday, departing on Sunday.

  6. The incident hike of maximum 14 miles will take place on the Saturday.

The event will be a test of navigation and observation based on the following:

    1. A theoretical navigational exercise.

    2. An on-going observational exercise, over the duration of the Hike.

    3. Orienteering type checkpoints in addition to the checkpoints in use for the Border Hike.

    4. Two incidents during the hike will be based on standard Scout practice.

  7. Points will be awarded for navigation and completing the tests, but not for speed. The event is not a race.

  8. Pennants and certificates will be awarded to all scouts completing the hike.

  9. Trophies will be awarded to First, Second and Third placed teams. The winning team will receive a cheque for £75

  10. On Sunday morning there will be a ‘Scouts Own’ service, followed by the presentation of awards.
